Former Spike TV president Kevin Kay (who produced All That, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Lip Sync Battle) will executive produce alongside Thompson. The Saturday Night Live star spent five seasons starring on the Nickelodeon sketch show and now he’ll have a big hand in shaping the direction of the weekly comedy series. Those include a revival of All That, which will be executive produced by its most famous alumnus, Kenan Thompson. In a major content slate announcement, Nickelodeon unveiled its plans for 2019 and beyond.
All That, with its sketch show format, is the outlier, and Nickelodeon is finally ready to bring back the groundbreaking kids series. The network’s strategy of using its ‘90s and ‘00s hits to connect generations proves a little harder when looking at its hit live-action shows shows like Clarissa Explains It All, Sneaky Pete, Kenan and Kel, and The Amanda Show were all character driven by the child stars of the moment.
The network also tapped into its rich game show IP, successfully introducing Double Dare to a new generation and reimagining Legends of the Hidden Temple as a TV movie. A new Hey Arnold film, upcoming features for Rocko’s Modern Life and Invader Zim, and a planned Rugrats revival are in the pipeline. The execs at Nickelodeon have been all about embracing the network’s animated past.
